About research at ACU

Research at Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University runs through its research groups, laboratories and application and research centres, and is supported by a set of offices and commissions that fund, review and carry research into use. This portal is edited by the Global Research, Reputation and Rankings Office (GR3) and presents that work to collaborators, applicants and the public.

Overview

Scientific Research Projects Commission (ABAPKO) evaluates scientific research and infrastructure development proposals from faculty members and researchers who have completed a doctorate or medical specialisation, and approves appropriations from the academic year budget. Its scope covers faculty R&D projects, interdisciplinary and inter-institutional projects, graduate, doctoral and medical specialisation theses, infrastructure projects proposed by department heads, projects supported in part by industry, TÜBİTAK or other national bodies, EU framework projects, education and technology projects, patent support projects and student projects under faculty supervision.

Academic Activities Support Commission (AFDK) evaluates requests for congresses, scientific meetings and publication activities for faculty members and graduate students. Article publication support takes Journal Citation Reports quartiles into account and covers research articles only; congress fees and article processing charges are paid against invoices issued to the institution.

Technology Transfer Office (TTO) raises awareness of support mechanisms and research opportunities, supports intellectual and industrial property, technology transfer and company formation, and develops policy in these areas. It supports project applications before and after submission so the university benefits from national and international funds, and acts as a bridge to the private sector so that research results are integrated into industry. Entrepreneurship, company establishment and incubation run through TEKMER; prototyping and design through the Biodesign Center; testing and analysis through ACUTAB.

Externally Funded Project System (DAPSİS) is where researchers record and follow every external funding application (TÜBİTAK, ministries, EU institutions and others). The DAPSİS process must be completed before any application that requires Rectorate approval, and approved projects are followed there too: budget balances, scholar entries and exits and institutional shares.

Ethics committees. The Clinical Research Ethics Committee, approved by the Turkish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency (TİTCK code 2025-KAEK-51), evaluates clinical research, medical-device investigations, stem-cell studies and observational studies. The Animal Experiments Local Ethics Committee (ACU-HADYEK) reviews every study involving laboratory animals before it starts.

Research areas declared by the School of Medicine include personalised medicine and genomic analyses; undiagnosed and rare diseases and orphan drugs; organoid-based research; chronic and multifactorial diseases; cancer research; biobanking; regenerative medicine and tissue engineering; spine disorders and surgery; infectious diseases and antimicrobial strategies; neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders; emerging technologies in healthcare; women’s health and reproductive medicine; and fetal-neonatal onset endocrinological diseases. Twenty-seven student research groups, from ACURARE–ACUTBAT to Spine Health, give medical students a supervised route into research.
