What we work on

Süyen Lab was founded by Prof. Güldal Süyen and brings together researchers from medicine, engineering, veterinary medicine and biology. The team focuses on neurological diseases, with particular emphasis on epilepsy and autism. In epilepsy the laboratory aims to contribute to biomarker discovery and to the development of new treatment approaches; to this end it combines behavioural studies with technologies such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.

Ongoing projects include metabolomic profiling of epileptogenesis in a lithium–pilocarpine temporal lobe epilepsy rat model (ABAPKO, 2023–2024); the effects of cytidine 5′-diphosphocholine and uridine monophosphate in a valproic acid rat model of autism (ABAPKO, 2024–2025); neuronal activity and behavioural change in a pentylenetetrazole seizure model in zebrafish, with the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience in Norway; and the DLK inhibitor GNE-3511 in a pilocarpine temporal lobe epilepsy mouse model, with UC San Diego. The last two run under the TÜBİTAK 2214-A International Research Fellowship Programme.

Alongside its research the laboratory mentors medical students and supports young researchers interested in neurophysiology.
