Fatih Artvinli was born in Artvin and graduated from the community health programme of Yusufeli Health Vocational High School. He studied Political Science and International Relations at Marmara University (BA) and Yıldız Technical University (MA) and completed his PhD in the Department of Atatürk's Principles and History of the Turkish Revolution at the same university. He worked as a health officer throughout his studies, and wrote his doctoral thesis on the history of psychiatry while working at the Bakırköy Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Mental Health and Neurological Diseases Training and Research Hospital. He carried out his post-doctoral research at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital on a Fogarty fellowship.
He has taken part in projects on the institutional history and memory of İstanbul's historic hospitals, including the Bakırköy Mental Hospital and the Erenköy and Heybeliada sanatoria. He is a board member of the Human Health and Education Foundation (İNSEV), a civil-society organisation working for the right to education and health, and editor-in-chief of İNSEV Publications.
A historian of medicine and psychiatry, he is a faculty member in the Department of History of Medicine and Ethics at Acıbadem University School of Medicine. Alongside articles in History of Psychiatry, Journal of the History of the Neurosciences, Osmanlı Bilimi Araştırmaları and Kebikeç, he has published two books: Seraba Harcanmış Bir Ömür: Osman Bölükbaşı (Kitap Yayınevi, 2007) and Delilik, Siyaset ve Toplum: Toptaşı Bimarhanesi (Boğaziçi University Press, 2013; 3rd edition Telemak Kitap, 2022).
