Prof. Filiz Onat has studied epilepsy since the 2000s, with a focus on genetic absence epilepsy and the kindling process. Her international collaborations include Zoltán Molnár at the University of Oxford on neuropeptidergic therapeutic strategies for absence epilepsy, Deniz Kirik at Lund University on the coexistence of epilepsy and Parkinson's disease, Sanjay Sisodiya and Philip Patsalos at University College London on climate change and epilepsy and on levetiracetam blood concentrations, and earlier work with Monash University, the University of Toronto, Cardiff University, Radboud University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
She chairs the Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University Clinical Research Ethics Committee (TİTCK code 2025-KAEK-51) and leads the School of Medicine's Neuroscience student research group.
