Vaccination is by far the most effective medical intervention to save lives. WHO has determined that more that 150 millions lives have been spared by vaccination over the last 50 years. Advances in immunology and biotechnology have led to the development of several vaccinations platforms including mRNA to immunize safely and efficaciously against many infectious diseases. Nevetheless, population coverage is still not optimal because of persistant hesitation of a fraction of people worldwide and because vaccines are not made available equally in all parts of the word. All of these issues will be discussed during the conference.

COST Action EDEM CA21137 – Ethics in Dementia Istanbul Meeting in Collaboration With Acıbadem University

COST Action EDEM CA21137 – Ethics in Dementia (EDEM) will hold a Management Committee (MC) & Working Group (WG) Meeting in Istanbul Acibadem University on September 4-5, 2025. The Local Host of the COST-EDEM Istanbul Meeting will be the History of Medicine and Ethics Department at Acibadem University School of Medicine represented by Prof. Dr. Yesim Isil Ulman, a member of the Action. The COST Action EDEM aims to reduce burnout and moral distress among caregivers and promote the dignity, autonomy, and quality of life of people with dementia, as a health challenge on the rise. With its two hundred known disease forms, dementia poses healthcare, societal and ethical issues to handle on a value based intervention.

Their gradual cognitive loss complicates retainment of autonomy and agency, and causes a number of ethical care dilemmas, including: balancing beneficence with freedom, deciding on the best interest of patient and recognising that the needs of the person with dementia may sometimes conflict with the needs of others who also deserve consideration. EDEM addresses this challenge. By involving a multitude of stakeholders in developing an ethical framework, recommendations and an educational toolkit available for use across Europe, EDEM aims at improving dignity, autonomy and quality of life of people with dementia, as well as reducing burnout and moral distress among caregivers.

Within the scope and aims of the COST Action EDEM will dedicate Istanbul Meeting on the ongoing and planned works, book projects and collaborative studies of the WG 3, WG 4, WG 5 during two days in Istanbul Acibadem University.

The 6th Photodynamic Day, an international congress organized by Prof. Dr. Fabienne Dumoulin, is going to be held on Tuesday 7th May in amphi A102 of our university. The full program is available here. Different aspects of photodynamic therapy, an alternative treatment for cancers and infections, will be discussed by our international speakers, as well as more general photodynamic applications. A poster prize will be awarded at the end of the day.

The 6th Photodynamic day is organized with the aim to maximize its sustainability, avoiding distribution of single-use plastic items, and with a tree planting during the closing ceremony to lower its carbon footprint, in line with the strong commitment of our university towards always better environmental practices.

The 6th Photodynamic Day is organized in relation to the International Day of Light (www.lightday.org), for which Fabienne Dumoulin at Acıbadem University is a national node. The İDL is administered from the International Basic Science Programme (IBSP) of UNESCO, is a global initiative that focuses on light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy.

In contrast, there is a significant shortage of faculty members in two fundamental research areas, health economics and finance, worldwide. The lack of interest from graduate students in these areas, difficulties in conducting research and studies, and other reasons contribute to the shortage of specialized faculty members and researchers in health economics and finance in academic institutions.

Introduction to CTR Prediction and Research Directions

Summary: Advertisement recommendation systems are now widely used whenever we surf the web, watch videos online, and purchase items, and they can also be used to recommend books and movies to users. We describe the task of click-through rate prediction and various research tasks about predicting the click-through rate. We present our solutions spanning machine learning, deep learning, and better prediction models.

Bio: Ergun Biçici received the B.S. degree from Bilkent University in 2000 and M.S. degree from North Carolina State University in 2002. He graduated from the PhD program in Computer Sciences and Engineering at Koç University, Istanbul, Turkey in 2011. From 2012 to 2015 he was a post-doctoral researcher at the ADAPT Research Center, Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland. From 2015 to 2016 he was a research scientist at DFKI, Germany. From 2017 to 2018 he was a researcher at TÜBİTAK. From 2018 to 2021 he was a research scientist at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey. Since 2022, he has been a senior AI research engineer at Huawei Turkey R&D Center. He is the author of more than 60 publications. His research interests include machine translation, machine learning, natural language processing, cloud computing, recommendation systems, and artificial intelligence.
